A furtive finger is placed on the lips of dissent in India. The government does this through malicious FIRs for sedition and defamation. In the Supreme Court, the government called its critics "prophets of doom". But such censorship is also done by fellow citizens.

Judgments of the Supreme Court have pointed out that there is an arbitrary application of the death penalty. This is a gross violation of human rights and is also counterproductive. Harsh punishments will not serve as a deterrent, if the punishment itself is applied arbitrarily.
A UCC does not have to place different faiths under the chokehold of the majority’s idea of what personal law ought to be; instead, a UCC should include idiosyncrasies from every faith in India. This is an opportunity for India to examine its social norms.
